Pathogenic germs
Listeria are rod-shaped bacteria that can trigger so-called “listeriosis” in humans.
In healthy adults, listeriosis "is usually unremarkable or takes a harmless course with flu-like symptoms such as fever and muscle pain or vomiting and diarrhea," explains the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) on its website.
However, certain risk groups such as the elderly or immunocompromised individuals and infants also have severe, sometimes fatal forms of listeriosis.
For pregnant women, the germs pose a special risk because "an infection can lead to stillbirth, premature birth and newborn listeriosis or to inflammation of the brain and meninges as well as sepsis (blood poisoning)", according to the LGL.
According to the experts, these forms of disease are fatal in around 30 percent of cases. (ad)
