Health-endangering listeria proven: manufacturer starts recall for meatballs
Fleisch-Krone Feinkost GmbH from Golderstedt (Lower Saxony) has started a recall for various ready-made meatballs. According to the company, it cannot be excluded that the meat products are contaminated with health-threatening bacteria. We do not recommend eating meatballs sold at Rewe and Norma.
Fleisch-Krone Feinkost GmbH from Golderstedt in Lower Saxony is calling meatballs and meatball balls back after listeria has been found in a sample. Just a few weeks ago, the dangerous pathogens made headlines nationwide after deaths from listeria in sausage and pizza.
Microbial contamination
According to a message that the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety published on its portal "lebensmittelwarnung.de", the following products are affected by the recall:
- Gut Bartenhof meatball classic and meatball balls with the batch numbers 97812 and 97813 with the best before date 05.11.2019
- "Yes! Meatball balls “500 g pack, with the best before dates 05.11.2019 and 20.11.2019, article EAN 43 888 4022 2728, veterinary control no. DE - NI 10138
"It cannot be ruled out that the affected packs are microbially contaminated," says the statement, which explains that the recall will take place, as a positive result of Listeria monocytogenes was found during a self-checkup. "We strongly advise against eating the affected products," the company writes.
Delivered to Norma and Rewe
According to the information, the product concerned was labeled "Gut Bartenhof" at Norma branches in Aichach (Bavaria), Rossau (Saxony), Ahrensfelde (Brandenburg), Dettingen (Baden-Württemberg), Rheinböllen (Rhineland-Palatinate) and Kerpen ( North Rhine-Westphalia). The "meatball balls" of the Rewe own brand "yes!" Were delivered according to "lebensmittelwarnung.de" in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. Customers can return the affected items to the stores for a refund of the purchase price.
See serious or persistent symptoms
Listeria are bacteria that can cause so-called “listeriosis”. This usually manifests itself within 14 days after infection with symptoms such as diarrhea, fever and headache.
However, the incubation period can also last up to eight weeks after the consumption of contaminated products. As the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) explains, pregnant women, seniors and people with a weakened immune system in particular can develop more severe disease courses with blood poisoning and meningitis. In pregnant women, even without symptoms, the unborn child can be harmed. In extreme cases, Listeria disease can lead to death.
Persons who have eaten the food affected by the recall and who develop severe or persistent symptoms should seek medical help and point out a possible Listeria infection. Pregnant women who have eaten this food should seek medical treatment without symptoms and seek advice, ”the company writes. This does not make sense for other people without symptoms. (ad)
